"Macau to see Vegas, Singapore revenue model"

Image
jun25 Macau with a population of just 700,000 squeezed into just 33 sq. kms, saw 35 million visitors serviced by just 43,000 hotel rooms in 2024. Its 30 casinos generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of US$28.3 billion in the same year. The oft-touted Las Vegas saw 41 million visitors spread over 150,211 hotel rooms, losing US$8.8 billion last year in circa 150 casinos. Regionally, Singapore has GGR of $4.3 billion generated by just two casinos. Its international visitors numbered 16.5 million in 2024, consisting of 18.7% Chinese, 15% Indonesia, and 0.7% from both India and Malaysia, spread over 73,000 hotel rooms. Thailand received 35.5 million international visitors in 2024, with the top four origin countries being China (19%), Malaysia (14%), India (6%) and South Korea (5%). Comparing Macau with Thailand, Macau may boast the same visitor volume, however if you removed the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the number of international tourists from outside these zones represent a mere 7.7...

10 anos é pouco tempo

jul23 The evolution of Macau to a more leisure and  MICE destination  will take time, likely much longer than the current  10-year concession  period,  CBRE Equity Research  said in a note, indicating that this is in part due to limited infrastructure, a lack of skilled labor, and lack of developable land. “The biggest transportation infrastructure hurdle for Macau is the airport, with limited direct service to cities outside of mainland China. This means Macau must rely on the Hong Kong airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).” “Although the  HZMB  has seen improved utilization since it opened in 2018, the long commute over the bridge will discourage major convention business that cannot fly directly into Macau.” The  labor shortage  issue in Macau was once again pointed out. Analysts at CBRE find that the skilled non-gaming labor shortage is accentuated. After lifting all the COVID-related restrictions this year, une...

Talentos

julho23 Authorities in Macau have announced that they’re rolling out a series of programs to attract foreign talent to the SAR, as early as August. Speaking at a panel, heads of some of the city’s main chambers of commerce lauded the move, noting that the city has been starved for new talent for years. https://agbrief.com/intelligence/deep-dive/06/07/2023/panel-foreign-talent-essential-for-macaus-diversification-attempt/?utm_source=Asia+Gaming+Brief&utm_campaign=4cfb212e51-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_5_19_2022_13_42_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_51950b5d21-4cfb212e51-69255637&ct=t(EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_5_19_2022_13_42_COPY_01)&goal=0_51950b5d21-4cfb212e51-69255637&mc_cid=4cfb212e51&mc_eid=31e20475e6

Macau faces unprecedented challenges in transitioning from gaming industry – University study

jun23 Macau will face a complex and severe stress test in the future as it continues to transition away from a gaming industry supported by mainland Chinese high-rollers, a recent university study has pointed out. According to a paper jointly compiled by three scholars from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Research Institute, the Shandong University, and the University of Macau – Edmund Sheng Li, Zhang Anning, and Yin Yechang, the city will have to address a number of social issues “neglected because of the illusion of ongoing prosperity” brought about by the gaming industry that experienced explosive growth following the city’s return to Chinese rule. These issues, as the ‘A city profile of Macau—The rise and fall of a casino city’ scholars pointed out, are associated with political transformation, livelihoods, governance, and urban planning. The economic recession that accompanied the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as Beijing’s push for an overhaul of the gaming sector, have ma...

GGR tax rate exemption

jun23 None of Macau’s six gaming concessionaires have so far applied for a form of “exemption” from the full 40-percent tax rate on casino gross gaming revenue (GGR), as potentially applicable – under the new concession system – to gambling by foreign players. That is according to Lei Wai Nong (pictured, centre), Secretary for Economy and Finance, in response to a question from a member of the city’s Legislative Assembly this week. Secretary Lei confirmed that the six operators had established areas specially for gambling by foreigners, across an aggregate of  12 casino properties . https://www.ggrasia.com/no-macau-op-yet-asked-ggr-tax-rate-exemption-govt/

jul25 GEG The end-Q2 tally no longer includes any Galaxy Entertainment Group properties in its “under construction” list, suggesting that GEG’s Phase 4 hotel developments are classified as completed by the DSSCU ahead of a planned 2027 opening. In the first quarter, GEG’s Phase 4 hotel projects in Cotai were still classified as being under construction, bringing the total area of hotels under construction in Macau to 121,624 square meters. In a  keynote speech delivered at G2E Asia in May , GEG Chairman Francis Lui said, “Our Phase 4 development, which is now topped out, promises to be a great leap forward for luxurious hospitality and entertainment worldwide. We are also planning a high-tech branded and immersive theme park. “These facilities will offer our guests and tourists to Macau a next generation resort experience – one that is always fun and engaging, green and sustainable, technologically-advanced and unforgettably Galaxy.” While only three hotels are currently under cons...
