“We expect investors will focus on whether it is making further progress within the premium mass segment over time, given the opening of Capella hotel – circa 100 suites – in mid-2025,” stated analysts Anne Ling and Jingjue Pei in a Thursday note.

That was a reference to premium mass gamblers – playing high stakes cash games rather than on credit – a customer segment considered a key target for Macau’s six casino concessionaires since the retreat of the credit-based junket VIP segment.

Capella at Galaxy Macau (pictured in an artist’s rendering) – a new 17-storey luxury hotel at Galaxy Macau – is due to open in “mid-2025”, according to previous statements of the casino group.

A December 3 press release from Singapore-based Capella Hotel Group, the promoter of the Capella brand, referred to a “second quarter” time frame for the Macau hotel.

Expansion plans for Grand Lisboa Palace

On the operational front, SJM is focusing on driving growth through its Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) property. The company plans to boost GLP’s performance by introducing more dining options, with 10 new restaurants expected to open over the next six months. As of 3Q24, five restaurants have already opened.

Additionally, SJM has appointed a new Chief Gaming Officer and plans to hire 50 more staff, predominantly premium mass hosts, to enhance operations and guest services.

According to a recent report, former Star Entertainment Group COO and gaming veteran Damian Quayle has joined SJM Resorts as Chief Gaming Officer.

However, these changes are expected to increase daily operating expenses at GLP, which may rise to HK$8 million ($1.03 million), up from HK$7.6 million ($977,000) in 3Q24. The company aims to achieve a 3 percent market share in gross gaming revenue (GGR) at GLP within the next 2-3 quarters, up from 2.7 percent in 3Q24.

In addition to expanding its restaurant offerings, SJM is refurbishing its hotels at GLP and adding 50 suites to its existing 470-room inventory. This investment in infrastructure is part of SJM’s broader strategy to attract higher-spending customers and improve overall performance.

The Venetian Macao’s new multi-purpose venue for performances boasts a centralised control system for managing lighting, video, and audio, the MNA has learned from a recent sneak peek.

The Venetian Arena – previously branded the Cotai Arena – now accommodates 15 VIP suites easily accessible from the main concourse.

Besides, there are also seven VIP bunker cabins and 10 suites on level four.

The new VIP lounge at the venue, which is capable of hosting large-scale live entertainment including sports events, can accommodate up to 450 guests.

The facility now boasts a seating capacity of 14,000, down from 15,000 previously and less than Galaxy Arena’s 16,000 seats.

Galaxy Arena is located within the Galaxy International Convention Center – the latest addition to Galaxy Entertainment Group’s Cotai complex.

Other noteworthy features include a 360-degree LED ribbon, LED corner screens, as well as a jumbotron-style scoreboard.

With its inaugural exhibition centred around the theme of the Maritime Silk Road – the historic sea trade route that connected Asia to the Middle East and Europe – the new Poly MGM Museum is set to debut on 2 November at MGM Macau.

The city’s newest museum is the result of a collaboration between the gaming concessionaire and Poly Culture Group Corporation – the art and culture arm of a sprawling state-owned conglomerate that has businesses ranging from real estate to resource investment. On display are nearly 230 artefacts and artworks from some 20 national museums and galleries, brought together by a curation team hailing from mainland China, Italy, and France.

Pieces featured in the current exhibition range from historical documents and artefacts retrieved from shipwrecks like navigation tools, bronze pieces, and porcelain.

Macau 2049”, a multimedia residency show for the MGM Theater at the MGM Cotai casino resort (pictured), will “debut” on December 15, with tickets on sale from November 2. That is according to a Friday announcement.

Celebrated Chinese director Zhang Yimou will lead the production of “Macau 2049″. Friday’s update said: “The trademark of ‘Macau 2049′ lies in how innovative methods are used to interpret and present intangible cultural heritage in completely novel forms to audiences.”

Macau’s concessionaires will spend a combined MOP$100 million (US$12.5 million) in sponsorships for the upcoming Macau Grand Prix, a decrease of MOP$20 million (US$2.5 million) from last year’s race.

The 71st Macau Grand Prix will be held over four days from 14 to 17 November and include seven events: the FIA FR World Cup, Macau GT Cup, Macau Guia Race, Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, Greater Bay Area GT Cup, Macau Roadsport Challenge and Macau SAR Establishment Cup. However, the traditional Formula 3 “main event” is not on this year’s schedule.

According to information from the Grand Prix committee, the MOP$100 million in sponsorship being contributed by the concessionaires includes MOP$20 million each from Galaxy, Sands, SJM and MGM and MOP$10 million each from Melco and Wynn. Last year all six concessionaires sponsored for MOP$20 million each.

The non-gaming projects mandated from Macau’s six casino operators by the city’s government would be of greater benefit to the local community and the operators themselves, if there were greater consultation with the public.

That is the suggestion of casino industry veteran Niall Murray (pictured), who now chairs sector consultancy Murray International (Macau) Co Ltd. His comments to GGRAsia were on the sidelines of a France Macau Chamber of Commerce event on Wednesday at which he was also a guest speaker on the topic of mounting regional competition to Macau’s gaming and leisure sectors.

The city’s six casino operators were initially required to commit collectively MOP108.7 billion (US$13.5 billion currently) for non-gaming investment, as a condition of their 10-year gaming concessions that began in January 2023. Subsequently that went up by 20 percent, after Macau’s market-wide casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) surpassed a predetermined threshold of MOP180-billion in full-year 2023.

Macau casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd has already engaged consultants and designers regarding its plan to add hotel rooms and “wellness” services to its MGM Cotai casino resort (pictured), reported on Wednesday business news service Bloomberg.

The media outlet cited people familiar with the matter, that were not able to speak on the record.

In December 2022, soon after MGM China got confirmation of a new 10-year Macau gaming concession, the company’s chairperson Pansy Ho Chiu King, fronted a press briefing that mentioned a raft of concession-related non-gaming investment commitments, many of them for MGM Cotai.

The latter has a bigger footprint than its older sister property, the 600-room MGM Macau on the city’s peninsula.

Among the pledges was an “Urban Oasis”, described as a “all-new landmark of health and wellness tourism”.

Casino operators have received at least 18 proposals from the Macau government under the referral mechanism established in 2023 to assist local groups with seeking funding, maritime authorities have said.

The update is according to a recent government reply to lawmaker Leong Sun Iok. Wong Soi Man, the director of the Maritime and Water Affairs Bureau, said that 10 of the 18 proposals were related to art and culture.

In July last year, the authorities unveiled a new system under which local groups seeking funding for their cultural and sporting projects are referred to the city’s six gaming operators for evaluation and consideration.

The legislator wrote to the bureau about whether the initiative could potentially benefit the industries of fisheries and ship making.

Galaxy Entertainment Group reported on Wednesday that the group’s net revenue for 2023 skyrocketed by 211 per cent year-on-year to HKD35.7 billion (MOP36.7 billion/ US$4.6 billion), with adjusted EBITDA at HKD10 billion.

In 2023, GEG kicked off several development projects, including the 450 all-suite Raffles at Galaxy Macau, the new premium mass Horizon Club, as well as the Galaxy International Convention Centre and Galaxy Arena. Looking ahead, Galaxy announced its plans to complete the construction of Phase 4, spanning 600,000 square metres, by 2027. This new development will introduce several high-end hotel brands to Macau, together with a 4,000-seat theatre, F&B and retail offerings, non-gaming amenities, a water resort deck, and a casino. At its flagship property Galaxy Macau, the group is reconfiguring the main gaming floor to provide an enhanced customer experience and completing the construction of a new high-limit slot area and other amenities. At StarWorld Macau, the group is evaluating a range of major upgrades, including enhancements to the main gaming floor and the lobby, as well as an increase in food and beverage options.

Studio City aims to launch in Phase 2 a multi-screen cinema probably “in the second quarter or early third quarter”, and an outlet of Japanese discount retail chain Don Don Donki in the first quarter. Both should drive extra foot traffic to the property, remarked the executive.

“Don Don Donki will be probably the biggest” space-wise and “is probably the one I’m most excited about,” Mr Benning told GGRAsia.

“Unique features” for the cinema complex include “recliner type seats” for [a] large-screen theatre, and capability to offer a “4D experience”.

The cinema complex will also house “three to four director’s clubs”, i.e., small-sized theatres offering food and drink, he noted.

Fresh retailers will be added during the current quarter to the shopping and dining facilities in Phase 1 as well as Phase 2 of the Studio City casino resort on Cotai, including a branch of Don Don Donki (pictured), the popular Japanese retail discount chain, to create the “right mix” for consumers and help drive foot traffic to the property, said Kevin Benning, senior vice president and property general manager, in an interview with GGRAsia.

Studio City is operated and majority owned by Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd. The company had confirmed to GGRAsia that Phase 2 also has a premium mass gambling zone within its Epic Tower hotel building. The latter saw its room accommodation have a soft opening in April.

The gaming concessionaires have been complying with the investment plans and social responsibility commitments stipulated in the contracts, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) said in a reply to a written question put forth by lawmaker Leong Sun Iok, public broadcaster TDM reported.

The reply penned by DICJ director Adriano Marques Ho states that gaming companies have been carrying out social responsibility activities specified in the concession contracts in areas such as culture, sports, scientific research, and support for local SMEs.

“It has been found that concessionaires are orderly carrying out and implementing various investment plans according to the approved arrangements,” the gaming watchdog stresses.

In his written query, Leong Sun Iok noted that under the new gaming law, one of the criteria for concession relates to the social responsibilities to be assumed by the gaming operators, with the respective content clearly defined.

11 DEC, 2023
