Ambrose So Shu Fai, vice chairman and chief executive of Macau gaming operator SJM Holdings Ltd, says the company is “optimistic” in keeping its casino licence. That is according to Wednesday comments to local public broadcaster TDM.

“Of course, we are optimistic about the renewal of the gaming licences coming up” next year, stated Mr So (pictured in a file photo). “SJM is a company rooted in Macau and I think we stand a very good chance of winning [a new licence],” he added.

The Macau government has said previously that there will be a new public tender process associated to the expiry of the current licences in 2022, although Macau’s gaming law is due to be amended prior to such a process. Pending a fresh public tender, Macau’s current gaming law allows for extension of the existing licences up to a maximum of five years from the original 20-year term.

Mr So also said he thought U.S.-based casino operators in Macau should not face headwinds because of political tensions between China and the United States. “If they [U.S.-based casino operators] obey the law and they support Macau, I think they should be welcomed rather than punished,” he told the local broadcaster. https://www.ggrasia.com/sjm-very-good-chance-on-macau-licence-renewal-ceo/

“I think there’s still a lot of uncertainty with the [gaming concession renewal]. The only thing that came out was the [new gaming law public consultation paper]. I think the Macau government has been fairly clear on what their thoughts are, but they have only indicated thought as opposed to specific changes,” McCreery stated. The Sands China representative noted that the group was “hopeful” and underlined that anything the group could have done in the past year was unlikely to be greatly consequential to the decision. “If you have been a bad dad for 20 years, being a good father for one year is not going to make much difference. I’m hopeful our contribution to Macau has been recognised […] It is still very unclear what the future holds.” However, he considered that a possible one-year extension would be the “worst scenario” as it would just extend uncertainty around the sector. https://www.macaubusiness.com/uncertainties-abound-for-2022-in-gaming-medical-and-banking-sectors-sector-reps/

Of greater concern to MGM is the upcoming re-tendering process for Macau gaming concessions, with the company having submitted its response to proposed changes to the gaming law in September following a public consultation process. The government is due to issue a report on the public consultation by March, although it remains unclear whether it can complete re-tendering by the time the current concessions expire on 26 June 2022. An extension of up to five years is permissible by law if required. I was pleased that back in September we got that process started, we provided our input on the different elements the government had asked us to respond on,” Halkyard said.“We think we’re going to have a pretty rapid review of that. I don’t know if we are going to make it by next June but we think the company is in a very good position for concession re-tendering. We are taking the process very seriously of course but we are optimistic about it.” Halkyard said the company remained bullish on Macau’s long-term prospects https://www.asgam.com/index.php/2021/12/02/suncity-junket-woes-to-have-little-impact-on-macau-business-mgm/

Macau’s gaming operators continue to be optimistic about Macau’s medium and long-term future but have highlighted cost control, maintaining staff, and Macau’s low vaccination rates as near-term challenges.  On Wednesday, representatives from Macau’s six concessionaires including Melco ResortsSJM HoldingsGalaxy Entertainment GroupMGM ResortsSands China, and Wynn Resorts spoke in an online panel session during the 2021 MGS Summit, which was moderated by the University of Macau scholar Davis Fong. https://agbrief.com/news/macau/17/11/2021/staff-cost-control-and-vaccination-near-term-challenges-for-macau-operators/?utm_source=Asia+Gaming+Brief&utm_campaign=8ba9559c2d-&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_51950b5d21-8ba9559c2d-69255637&ct=t()&goal=0_51950b5d21-8ba9559c2d-6925563

Galaxy Entertainment Group’s Senior Vice President of Public Relations, Buddy Lam, says it is vital for operators to continue investing in Macau to ward off competition for regional tourist dollars from other cities within the Greater Bay Area. Lam was responding to questions during a panel session at MGS Summit on Wednesday about Galaxy Macau’s Phase 3 and Phase 4 development projects, and specifically why the company was pushing ahead in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to open in 2022, Galaxy Macau Phase 3 will include new gaming and retail space plus the 450 all-suite tower Raffles at Galaxy Macau and the Galaxy International Convention Center with an Andaz Macau hotel. “We have confidence in Macau’s long-term future development,” Lam told a panel featuring representatives of all six Macau concessionaires. “Last week Macau rolled out its master plan for the tourism industry and it is anticipated that tourism will reach 40 million per year [by 2025], so once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control we will see visitation return to 2019 levels in no time. “We will be prepared for the recovery but in the meantime we should work on self-improvement within this industry. The development of the Greater Bay Area means there will be competition between cities in the region. https://www.asgam.com/index.php/2021/11/17/reinvestment-in-macau-assets-vital-to-stave-off-greater-bay-area-competition-galaxy/

Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) Chairman Lui Che Woo has praised the government’s proposed gaming law amendments. “We believe that the suggested proposals would improve the regulatory oversight of the industry, increase the sector’s transparency and secure the long-term viability of Macao’s most important [economic] pillar,” Lui said in a letter attached to the release of the resort operator’s third-quarter financial data. Lui pointed out that the government’s proposals were released in the third quarter during its 45-day public consultation exercise on the proposed amendments.
“The key points that were listed within the consultation paper were not a surprise to those who closely follow Macao,” Lui said. Lui also praised the government “for acting decisively to contain the most recent outbreak of Covid-19 including completing the mass testing of Macao’s residents,” adding that his company “has achieved a 92 per cent vaccination level for team members and we are working hard to achieve 95 per cent in the near future.” https://macaonews.org/gaming/galaxy-chairman-lui-che-woo-welcomes-proposed-gaming-law-amendments/

The Macau gaming law revision process “has been open, transparent, and productive,” said on Tuesday the management of United States-based casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd. “We expect that to continue throughout 2022 as Macau really focuses on the long-term health and stability … of the industry and of the region,” stated Matt Maddox, the group’s chief executive, adding that the group was “very confident in the process.” He was speaking in a conference call with investment analysts following the group’s third-quarter results announcement. https://www.ggrasia.com/macau-gaming-law-review-process-pragmatic-wynn-execs/ + https://www.macaubusiness.com/gaming-law-consultation-process-transparent-and-productive-wynn-ceo/ “We’ve been very impressed with the partnership orientation of the government with their pragmatism and also the progress that’s been made,” Coughlan said. “It has been very transparent. They’ve allowed us to engage directly in person and also in writing. We’ve shared our concern (around certain amendments to the gaming law). We don’t have clarity on a number of the issues at this point, but we will look at clarity further along the way. https://www.asgam.com/index.php/2021/11/10/macau-authorities-seeking-license-stability-amid-growing-regional-competition-wynn-execs/

Management at Macau casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd is “highly confident” in ultimately keeping its casino licence. That is according to Wednesday comments by MGM China chairperson Bill Hornbuckle (pictured in a file photo). But he added that he was unsure whether the process to refresh the city’s six casino concessions would be in place by June next year, when the current concessions expire.“Macau remains an important part of our business,” Mr Hornbuckle told an investor conference call after the announcement of the third-quarter results of MGM Resorts International, the parent of MGM China. “We will continue to work with the government, and we are highly confident in ultimately getting our licence renewed,” he said. “Ongoing discussions with the government give us a greater confidence in our belief that the process will be both judicious and fair.” https://www.ggrasia.com/mgm-confident-on-macau-licence-not-sure-if-renewal-june-2022/ “But whether this gets done by June I just don’t know.

Las Vegas Sands CEO Robert Goldstein and others in the company’s C-suite spent most of the company’s third quarter earnings call Wednesday laying out why they aren’t concerned by Chinese gaming regulators’ plan to increase scrutiny on Macau gaming operators. Instead, they repeatedly described regulators there as “very reasonable, very thoughtful, and very fair.” All of Macau’s casino operators are required to rebid for their licenses, as they expire in June 2022. When asked if he could even envision a worst-case scenario where Las Vegas Sands doesn’t get a license renewal, Goldstein quickly shot down that idea. “I do not. I see no chance of that whatsoever,” he said. “I think the government recognizes we’ve been a good licensee.” Part of that optimism stems from how Las Vegas Sands is a major employer in the region and invested $15 billion so far developing casino resorts. The company also has more hotel rooms in the region than any other operator. “We remain confident the process will work out,” Goldstein said. “We have two decades of history with this government, and it’s been a very good two decades.” https://skift.com/2021/10/20/las-vegas-sands-ceo-praises-china-with-macau-gaming-license-up-for-renewal/ + https://www.macaubusiness.com/sands-china-net-losses-expand-in-q3/ Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Rob Goldstein believes there is “no chance” the company’s Macau subsidiary, Sands China, will be overlooked for a new casino concession when the upcoming re-tender process is complete. Investor concerns over Macau license re-tendering and proposed revisions to the SAR’s gaming law were the main topics of conversation during LVS’s 3Q21 earnings call on Thursday (Asia time), although Goldstein remained steadfast in his confidence as to where Sands China is placed. He also confirmed the company has already submitted to the government its responses to those proposed gaming law revisions. https://www.asgam.com/index.php/2021/10/21/sands-china-no-chance-of-being-overlooked-for-new-macau-casino-concession-goldstein/

The management of Macau casino concessionaire SJM Holdings is anticipating a 10-year term for new gaming licenses, with all six operators likely to have their licenses renewed following a re-tendering process expected to take place next year.

SJM’s comments were made during an investor meeting with Goldman Sachs in the wake of proposed amendments to Macau’s gaming law put out for 45 days of public consultation last week.

While those proposed amendments have caused some concern among investors, a Goldman Sachs report says SJM remains comfortable in how the SAR’s re-tendering process will play out and expects all six concessionaires to be issued new licenses.

The company also anticipates the government to follow through with a proposal to amend the current 20-year license term, suggesting a shorter 10-year term is “a reasonable estimate.” https://www.asgam.com/index.php/2021/09/22/sjm-tipping-new-macau-gaming-licenses-to-include-10-year-term/
